The old
markers are left over from railroad days when the train ran
through here on the way to West Jefferson, NC. The distance
is measured from the station in Abingdon (photo below). The
markers are roughly half a mile apart. These original markers
are over eighty years old.

The new
markers were created for the Virginia Creeper Trail, and measure
the distance beginning at the trailhead in Abingdon (photo
below), where the old Norfolk and Western steam locomotive
is located, about half a mile from the original station.
